Toledo is a labyrinth of ancient cobblestone streets and is very hilly so you basically hike Toledo.  We had a wonderful local tour guide in Toledo. He told us that there used to be something like 10 synagogues and 5 Hebrew academies and many Jewish people in Toledo prior to the 14th century, but there are no Jews in Toledo now.  The entire city is a UNESCO site. We saw one historic synagogue which became a church with Hebrew on all the interior walls as well as other sites. The tour lasted about 2.5 hours and rather than going with some other people on the tour for lunch (meals are lengthy in Spain – at least 2 hours and we only had a little over 2 hours before returning to Madrid), I went on my own to explore Toledo. I watched an artisan hammer strands of gold, the thickness of a strand of air) into lead – fascinating. This type of crafts is called “damascene” and I bought a Star of David pendant and chain. I meandered through Toledo thoroughly enjoying this enchanting historic city.
